Fire safety gear protects families

If your child is heading off for school it is natural that you would be concerned for her well-being. There are several types of fire safety gear that you should expect to be included in her college dorm room.

One of these is sprinkler systems. People tend to think of these as available only in commercial buildings, but you could reasonably expect them to be in a dormitory as well.

Barrier walls and fire doors should also be in the dormitory. Barrier walls are made to resist fires, and will keep it from spreading from one room to another for up to several hours depending on the construction. The doors are similar, and often close automatically in case of excessive heat, smoke or an alarm.

Don't forget campus fire safety

When your child is going away to school, in addition to looking at the fire safety gear in the dorm it is a good idea to look at the history of the school. Has the college had any recent fires, and if so how serious have they been? Have there been false alarms, and if so what have been the consequences to the students who sounded the alarms? Have there been disciplinary procedures when one of the students has shown poor judgment and created a potentially hazardous situation? All of these are important, because they indicate how seriously the school looks at campus fire safety.

Avoid deadly smoke

Any time your child is in danger of a fire, he is also in danger of the deadly consequences of smoke inhalation.
